On our second day in Rome, we visited the Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum, and the ruins. We had lunch at Cafe Romano by the Spanish Steps, walked around the city a bit, then came back to hotel to regroup.

Back to the Motherland - Rome, Italy, Part 1
So, I admit it, I've been on a bit of a hiatus with the blogging...but I promise there is a lot to share! Starting with... our recent trip to Italy.
My husband and I just celebrated our first wedding anniversary and we wanted to do something special for the milestone. When his cousins mentioned a trip to Rome and Positano, we thought, "Why not?"! I went to Italy about 10 years ago and was lucky enough to visit Rome as part of that trip. However, it was before I went to school for Interior Design so, although I was definitely excited to see the historic sites then, I knew I'd appreciate it even more this time around. My girlfriend at work likes to refer to this as the "old lady version" of my trip back to Italy. ha!
After the, oh so glamorous 10 hour flight....yes, 10 hours. Eight actually flying, two sitting on the tarmac...with no sleep... we landed in Roma. Of course, we were jet lagged but the adrenaline and excitement of finally being there took over and we were ready to go after we freshened up at the hotel!
The Spanish Steps were by our hotel, so that was the first thing we checked out.
We then went to grab a pizza for lunch, here are some of the streets we passed on the way.
From there we visited the Trevi Fountain. It was, of course, packed with tourists, but we managed to get to the bottom so we could make our wishes without hitting anyone with change!
Then off to the Pantheon we went! On our way, I saw so many beautiful architectural details.
The Pantheon is one of my favorite buildings. The "eye" is just so incredible and there are so many beautiful features about it. It's such a great part of architectural development and history. I felt really lucky to be able to be there twice in my lifetime.
In the piazza, there was singing, dancing, and...gelato. Ooh, Gelato. The first one we had was outside of the pantheon. This would be the start of a true addiction that the four of us will have a problem breaking!

No Sew / No Drill Window Valance
The other weekend I did a whole lot of painting. Not the fun kind though...I worked on our French Doors and as much trim as I could get to. I needed a break but wanted to stay productive, so I ended up making a $0 valance for above the kitchen sink. I had this fabric sample from over a year ago with the intention to make a valance out of it, but never had the time, so I just used it as a runner in the guest room. So if you don't have a fabric sample "lying" around, go find a runner you like! It will probably be even easier since it's already sewn too!
I'm not the best seamstress so I cheated a bit... actually, a lot. I had the iron-on tape from another old project, so I used that instead of sewing! I just folded over the bottom part about a 1/4" to 1/2", and the top part about 2". Of course, this all depends on the size of your sample. I just eye-balled it.
My original plan was to mount this rod above the window for the valance to hang from; however, our faux wood blinds aren't inside mounted, so the depth of the rod didn't work for me.
Just when I thought I couldn't do it, I realized I bought the Command Strips the night before to hang the Wine Cork "N" I made for our wall gallery. I only had one left, so I cut it in half and stuck it right on the top.
And that was it! I just stuck the fabric to the Command Strips. It's been up for over a week and hasn't fallen down, ha! Who knew those things would come in handy?!

Mint + Gold
Maybe it's the weather and the fact that I'm starting to get Spring Fever, but I've been loving Mint lately (and not just in terms of the Girl Scout Cookies I just bought). The color is so soft and refreshing, I just love it. I love it even more when it's combined with gold.
This weekend, I was planning on refinishing a tray my mom had for our coffee table. I was originally just going to sand it down and paint it white (it's currently blue). However, I happened to stumble upon this gorgeous wall covering by Candice Olson (for MDC Wall covering) today and I think I'm going to use a piece of it in the bottom of the tray. Our home is purposely gray and beige with the intent to add pops of color...the problem is, I haven't been adding the color part! So the goal is to "Think Spring"!
Here's an image of the wall covering... it's a little hard to see, but the lines of the pattern are gold.

Wine Corks + Amazon box = Wall Art?
So I'm in the process of updating the wall gallery I designed a few years back in our Living/Dining Room. Since I want to break the picture frame grid a little bit, I started looking for different pieces. I found a galvanized metal "N" when I was in Boston a while back but never bought it. So I checked out Etsy to find something similar...and came across the smaller "N" below for $20.
....but with all that we have going on, I decided to keep the "impulse buys" to a minimum and play with different options to save some cash.
So I decided to try a different alternative that cost me a whopping ZERO dollars!
(unless you count all the wine we drank in the past and the Amazon order Rick received today)
This mini-project took me about a 1/2 hour. The best part is, it gives you an excuse to open a bottle! After all, it's "for art". :)
